Though my folks kept horses when I was a kid, I always figured that a "hay burner" really had no place on a small piece of property focused on self reliance..... What with one thing and another, I am a recent and current horse custodian. Do any of you folks keep horses, and if so, do you use them as anything more than a companion that you can ride?

We do not currently have horses, but would very much like to.
For myself I want to have horses as companions and to ride. Then again when I get to pet and hug the neck of one it just makes my entire day! ;D At least to me something about them just makes them worth having even if they don't contribute. But I figure they are contributing by keeping my blood pressure lower and my general mental health up.
My dear, accomodating hubby has to put up with me at the fair wanting to spend hours in the horse barns or the animal barns in general. His favorite words are "Don't pet that..." Poor guy!

As someone who has 15 horses on our acreage they are GREAT. They are companions, and they supply fertilizer and mow hard to get to areas as well as simple companions, And theres absoutly NO REASON ya can't hook one to a fallen tree etc and pull it, they can come in handy.
