I've always liked the info presented in Ten Acres Enough on this subject. You might also scare up a copy of Finding and Buying Your Place in the Country.
Lot/Homestead Layout Planning « Result #2 on Oct 19, 2007, 9:52am »
I am looking for information on how to design the exact layout and location of each of the components of my future homestead/home including the house, shop, driveway, garden, etc. Any information will be appreciated on good books, computer design programs, and other resources that will help me to design exactly where everything will go, and to determine what size each homestead component will be before I start building. Thanks! Bill
Re: Purpose of keeping a horse? « Result #3 on Jul 5, 2007, 12:48pm »
As someone who has 15 horses on our acreage they are GREAT. They are companions, and they supply fertilizer and mow hard to get to areas as well as simple companions, And theres absoutly NO REASON ya can't hook one to a fallen tree etc and pull it, they can come in handy.
Seed catalogue recommendations and links? « Result #4 on Jan 16, 2007, 12:38pm »
January makes me crazy.....the year has rolled over, but I can't DO anything yet. So, I'm ordering seed catalogues. I've ordered: Gurney Territorial Johnny's Vermont Bean Nichol's Rain Tree R.H. Shumway
...and I've bookmarked a few other sites. Burnt Ridge Nursery in Onalaska, WA is a *totally* cool site! Great prices, and Michael on the phone was really helpful and informative. http://www.burntridgenursery.com
Site clean up and revamp « Result #5 on Jan 16, 2007, 12:32pm »
Finally...just spent some time cleaning up the spam on the website and here on this board. Many thanks to the nice folks at ProBoards for adding the security check feature. I've also taken out the modified guestbook on the website which served as a join-up tool...spam had disabled that feature entirely. Now new folks will have to e-mail me and I'll input their info.
Sorry I've not been more attentive to this site....I was, but there was less and less activity and it just got put on the back burner. Hopefully, with the tweaks and a couple of promotional posts in a few places we can get back on track. I've made one announcement post on the Seattle Craig's List page...please feel free to put up invitations to join us anywhere you can find that's appropriate.
The counter on the front page of the site at about noon today (01/16/07) was 2,679....
Hi, I am also in SW Washington although we are building in central Montana. I have lived in the Centralia area all of my life and currently living in a cabin/apartment on a horse ranch in Onalaska. Are you anywhere near?

Hello all; My name is Bob Merrill and I am most interested in seeing what can happen if we choose to pursue the convictions that cause us to look "BACKHOME." It is no secret that the healthiest and happiest peoples of America live in the past Agrarian Age. No, I am not going to promote that we go back to anything.... but that we take what we have learned and apply it sustainably as we move on. It is actually very doable and won't require as much sacrifice as focus. I saw a movie about post oil life in America called "The End of Suburbia". I personally found it most factual and presented in a very palatable manner..... it is a must see for those who are "AWAKE." Let us know how you liked it??
Linda--- Welcome! Do you ever get to Portland? There seems to be a few of us here, but we seem to be running into the slow growth problem of word-of-mouth, grass roots organizations. Tell all your friends! Maybe we can have that picnic Robert is wishing for yet! My partner and I are currently hoping to land on a little bit of dirt outside Rainer, OR in very short order. How close are you to Rainer?
